What's a SWER Line? Why It Limits Your Rural Solar System

If you live out of town, you've probably heard someone mention a "SWER line" at some point. Maybe your neighbour brought it up. Maybe a solar quote came back smaller than you expected, and nobody explained why.

Here's the short version. If you're on a SWER line, the amount of solar power you can send back to the grid is limited. Not the amount you can generate. Not the amount you can use. Just the amount you're allowed to export.

That one detail trips up a lot of rural solar buyers, especially if they've already seen a quote built for a suburban home. So let's slow down and go through it properly.

What Is a SWER Line, Really?

SWER stands for Single Wire Earth Return. It's a way of running power out to properties that are spread far apart, using just one wire instead of the usual three.

Think about it like plumbing. A normal suburban street has a wide pipe feeding lots of close-together homes. Out in the country, there's no way to run that same wide pipe for kilometres to reach one farmhouse. It wouldn't make financial sense. So the network runs a single, lighter wire out to you instead, using the earth itself to complete the circuit.

It's a clever, low-cost way to get power to remote areas. But it also means that wire simply can't carry as much electricity, in either direction, as a normal three-wire setup.

How Do You Know If You're on a SWER Line?

If your property is well out of town, on a single power pole line running across paddocks, there's a decent chance you're on SWER. It's common across inland Queensland and regional NSW, particularly on properties more than a few kilometres from the nearest town centre.

The easiest way to know for sure is to check your latest power bill or ask your network distributor (Ergon Energy in regional Queensland, or Essential Energy in regional NSW). A solar installer who works regionally, like our team, will usually be able to tell just from your address and a look at the pole line running into your property.

Why SWER Lines Have Lower Export Limits

Here's the part that catches people out. Solar panels don't care what kind of wire they're connected to. They'll generate the same amount of power on a SWER line as anywhere else.

The problem is what happens next. When your panels make more power than your house is using, the extra gets pushed back out onto the grid. On a normal suburban connection, that's usually fine, the wire can handle it. On a SWER line, that thin single wire has a lot less spare capacity. Push too much power back through it, and it can cause voltage problems, not just for you, but for other properties further down the same line.

So network operators put a cap on it. Not to be difficult, but because the line physically can't take unlimited two-way traffic.

How Much Can You Actually Export on a SWER Line?

This varies a bit depending on your exact location and network, but as a general rule, SWER-connected properties in Queensland are often limited to around 2kW of export. That's noticeably lower than the 5kW per phase that's common on standard suburban connections.

It's worth saying again, because it's the bit people misread: that number is your export limit, not your system size limit. You can still install a much bigger system than 2kW. You just won't be allowed to send more than the approved amount back out to the grid at any one time.

Does This Mean You Can't Get a Decent Solar System?

No, and this is where a lot of city-based solar advice falls flat for rural buyers. A low export limit doesn't mean a small system. It just means the system needs to be designed differently.

The goal on a SWER-connected property shifts from "sell as much power back to the grid as possible" to "use as much of your own power as possible, the moment you make it." That's actually a smarter way to save money anyway, because what you use yourself is worth far more than what you export. Feed-in tariffs are low. The power you don't have to buy from the grid is worth several times more per kilowatt-hour than the power you sell back.

So on a rural property, we'll often size a system larger than you'd expect, big enough to run your pumps, sheds, cold rooms and household loads through the day, while still respecting the export cap.

Why a Battery Matters More on a SWER Line

This is where a battery earns its keep. If your panels are generating more than your house needs and more than you're allowed to export, that extra power has to go somewhere, or it just gets wasted.

A battery catches it instead. Rather than pushing surplus power out through a line that can't take much of it, the battery stores it for you to use later, in the evening, overnight, or during a blackout. On a SWER line, a battery isn't really a luxury add-on. It's often the difference between wasting a chunk of your solar generation and actually using nearly all of it.

Can the Export Limit Ever Be Increased?

Sometimes, yes. In some cases, a network study or negotiated connection agreement can allow a higher export limit, though it usually comes with a fee and isn't guaranteed to be approved. It depends on how much spare capacity that particular line has, and how many other properties are already drawing from it.

This is exactly the kind of detail that's easy to get wrong without local experience. A solar company used to installing in the suburbs might not think to check it at all. It's a standard part of how we plan every rural job.

The Bottom Line

A SWER line doesn't rule solar out. It just changes how the system needs to be planned. Get the design right, size it around your actual daytime usage, and pair it with a battery where it makes sense, and a rural property on a SWER line can still see power bills drop to almost nothing.

The mistake to avoid is getting a system quoted the same way a city home would be, without anyone checking your connection type first. That's how people end up with a system that's either undersized for their farm loads or fighting an export cap it was never designed around.
